Silver Support Scheme
What is the Silver Support Scheme
Introduced in 2016, the Silver Support (SS) Scheme provides a quarterly cash supplement to seniors who had low incomes during their working years and now have less in their retirement.
The SS Scheme was enhanced in 2021 to strengthen support for seniors with lesser means. The quarterly payouts were raised, and the enhancements benefitted close to 250,000 Singaporeans aged 65 and above.
Since the scheme was implemented in 2016, about $2.2 billion of SS payouts have been given to more than 180,000 seniors.
Together, the SS Scheme and Workfare constitute the 4th pillar of Singapore’s social security system. Just as Workfare tops up the wages of lower-income Singaporeans during their working years, SS adds to their incomes in retirement.
The SS Scheme is also part of a wider suite of schemes (e.g. Pioneer Generation Package, Merdeka Generation Package, GST voucher) that the Government has put in place in recent years to give seniors greater assurance in retirement.
Seniors who qualify for SS will automatically receive their quarterly cash supplement. There is no need to apply.
